Who We Are and What We Do Carden School of Camarillo has flourished along with the community. It was founded in 1978 and now has an enrollment of approximately 200 students. At Carden, Students are surrounded by others with the same common goals and aspirations. They find an environment where academic achievement is esteemed and doesn't interfere with social acceptance. The socialization process begins with our two year olds for whom we provide an opportunity for emotional, intellectual and physical growth in a nurturing environment. Continuing in grades Kindergarten through eighth, children are taught to think critically, laying the foundation for strong academic skills. An interrelated, sequential curriculum sustains this learning and growth, enabling the children to gain confidence, self-motivation and a general enthusiasm for knowledge. Students are taught in small groups, allowing for attention to individual needs and ensuring that they won't get lost. Academic courses include reading, comprehension, phonics, mathematics, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, composition, science, history, Spanish, art, computers, music, speech, drama, and physical eduaction. Small classes, individual attention, and close student-teacher relationships all work together to create capable, responsible children for whom school is enjoyable. Carden applauds the enthusiam, the idealism, and the creativity of students in grades five through eight, while always encouraging their increasing maturity, academic progress, and responsibility. Academically, students in these classes build on the knowledge and skills learned in lower grades. Beginning in sixth grade, classes are taught by specialists in math, science, history, and language arts. These courses are designed to meet the developmental needs of our students as well as to stimulate and challenge our most gifted scholars. Families spend many years at Carden developing strong attachments to our school. A weekly assembly is held for the entire student body at which several classes recite poems or perform dramatizations. Parents and friends take part in their children's lives at our school by attending special events during the year such as Assemblies, Back-to School-Night, Grandparent's Day, Classroom Plays, House Athletic Tournaments, Spring Open House, Family Night, Track and Field Day, and the Middle School Evening Performance. Carden students interact with other students in the Ventura County community. They participate in Camarillo Academic Olympics, Ventura County Science Fair, National Geographic Geography Bee, Scripps/Howard Spelling Bee, and El Camino Real Speech League. All grades travel off campus several times a year for educational field trips, reinforcing classroom learning. Students in grades six through eight may chose to travel for six days to Washington, Boston or another destination of interest fostering closer relationships among classmates and independence from parents. |
